As Morningstar’s workforce rapidly grew from 5,200 to 11,500 employees in just six years, the company faced a significant challenge: scaling training across 34 countries without a large instructional design team. The L&D team needed a flexible approach to deliver training efficiently. By adopting Easygenerator and Cornerstone, they found a way to build a scalable learning ecosystem that could meet the needs of a growing global workforce.

Kevin Seifert, Global Head of Learning and Development, joined Morningstar during a period of rapid growth. In just six years, the company grew from 5,200 to 11,500 employees. Kevin’s challenge: how to scale learning fast across a global workforce.

“When I joined, we had no real learning infrastructure. Training was mostly in person and very manual,” Kevin says. “We needed a way to deliver learning at scale without hiring a huge L&D team.”

Key results

  • Scaled training to 11,500 employees across 34 countries
  • Enabled a decentralized learning model instead of a central content team
  • 400+ internal experts actively create learning content
  • Over 1.500 courses created by employees
  • Moved away from in-person and English-only training

Scaling global training with a small L&D team

Challenges

  • Rapid workforce growth from 5,200 to 11,500 employees
  • Need to scale training across 34 countries
  • Small L&D team with limited capacity
  • Heavy reliance on in-person training
  • Training delivered mainly in English

Before Easygenerator and Cornerstone, most training at Morningstar was in-person and in English. This created significant barriers: coordinating live sessions across multiple time zones was a logistical nightmare and the lack of localized training content disadvantaged non-English-speaking employees. Without a standardized process or central content creation team, employees relied on slides or informal sessions, making it difficult to maintain consistency and scale knowledge across a global workforce.

“There was no consistent way to create or share learning content. Everything was learner-driven and fragmented,” Kevin explains.

Live training also became more challenging as Morningstar expanded. Coordinating sessions across time zones and countries became challenging.

Enabling employees to create and share learning at scale

To scale training and meet growing demand, Morningstar switched to a decentralized approach. With Easygenerator, they gave employees an easy way to create learning content.

“This is one of Easygenerator’s superpowers,” says Kevin. “You can put it in someone’s hands, and they can start building courses right away. That enabled us to scale learning without needing a big team of instructional designers.”

Once Easygenerator was in place, Morningstar brought in Cornerstone as its LMS. The team uses it to assign courses, track completions, and manage learning paths across different regions and roles.

“Cornerstone gave us the structure we needed,” Kevin explains. “With its segmentation features, we can easily assign the right training to the right people, even across subsidiaries.”

Localization was another turning point. With employees in 34 countries, Morningstar needed a cost-effective way to localize training.

“We didn’t have a process to create multilingual courses before,” Kevin says. “With EasyTranslate, teams can translate content with a few clicks. They can review and adjust the translations as needed, which helps us reduce learner friction.”

“With Easygenerator and Cornerstone, we can actually see what skills we're building—and how many. Every year, the cumulative skills we build are growing.”

Results of scaling learning without growing the L&D team

Since rolling out Easygenerator and Cornerstone, Morningstar has built a scalable learning ecosystem that supports its growing workforce. The company expanded from 5,200 to 11,500 employees without growing its L&D team. Instead of centralizing course creation within L&D, they took a decentralized approach by enabling their employees to create training on Easygenerator.

Today, over 400 internal experts across Morningstar create content. From compliance training to team-specific knowledge, they can share what they know quickly and clearly.

With EasyTranslate, teams can now quickly adapt content into different languages and share it with their local offices. This has made it easier for learners to access training in their native language and helped the company meet local compliance requirements.

Kevin also noted a year-over-year increase in skill-building and a decrease in employee attrition, showing that Morningstar’s learning ecosystem is helping employees grow and stay.

“The biggest shift for us is that we can finally serve the ‘middle,’ the large group of employees who previously had to figure things out on their own or wait for in-person training. Now, we can support them at scale,” Kevin explains.

How Morningstar scaled learning with a decentralized approach

Kevin and his team focused on keeping things simple and flexible to make learning work at scale. Instead of building a large, centralized L&D team, they leaned into a decentralized approach.

With Easygenerator, employees can create and update content as part of their day-to-day work. Meanwhile, Cornerstone handles delivery and tracking. The tools make it easy to roll out training without slowing anyone down.

The team also created templates and simple processes to maintain quality so that content remains useful and on-brand. EasyTranslate helps local offices adjust training for their needs.

“Our goal is to keep improving adoption across all business units,” Kevin says. “The more we grow, the more important it is to have tools that let us scale learning without adding complexity.”
