Introduction
WSP is an engineering and professional services consulting firm that serves over 40 countries. The company has 6,000 employees in Australia alone—globally, that number is 66,200. Dr. Fiona McLean is an e-learning designer at WSP’s Australia region. She develops online learning and upskills employees on knowledge-sharing practices. Faced with the challenge of preventing knowledge loss as employees retire, Fiona needed a solution to preserve and share expertise across the organization.
Challenge
WSP Australia faced a serious challenge: retiring employees took decades’ worth of knowledge and expertise when they left the company. They had a traditional, top-down learning strategy that involved face-to-face training, long webinars, and a needs-based mentorship program for young professionals. These methods weren’t engaging for learners, and they weren’t scalable. The Learning & Development team also used tools like Rise and Articulate Storyline, but these required technical expertise and didn’t allow widespread use across employees. With only a few licenses and four learning designers, meeting the growing demand for learning content was challenging. Plus, capturing the knowledge of senior employees before they retired proved impossible.
Solution
WSP’s UK region had been using Easygenerator for a year when the Learning & Development team in Australia saw its value. They recognized it as an effective tool for employees to create courses and share knowledge independently. Fiona initiated a pilot program, choosing early adopters from different parts of the business to test the tool. Easygenerator’s user-friendly platform allowed people to create and update training materials without any technical know-how. So, the early adopters quickly embraced the tool. Other than its ease of use, Fiona highlights Easygenerator’s ongoing support as a key advantage. Unlike other solutions in the market that offer a single onboarding session, Easygenerator’s customer success team provides monthly workshops on various topics for course authors. Plus, Fiona notes that the 24-hour live chat feature encourages many more people to use the tool, as they know help is just a click away whenever needed.
Result
190 resources in the first year
Today, WSP Australia has 97 authors using Easygenerator to create expert-led learning content. They have over 190 courses and counting—some courses have reached up to 900 learners. With Easygenerator, employees now share valuable knowledge at the end of each project and before retiring, which has significantly reduced the impact of knowledge bleed. And the range of these courses isn’t limited to the Australia region. WSP’s head office in Canada translates the courses from English to Canadian French with the auto-translation feature, saving time and resources. In 2024, WSP implemented Easygenerator on a global scale to unify its learning and democratize content creation. WSP now captures, translates, and shares employee expertise across the company with a single tool.
How WSP Australia did it
Fiona took a strategic approach to roll out Easygenerator across WSP Australia. She identified and onboarded early adopters who were enthusiastic about the tool. After building the initial momentum, she promoted Easygenerator at meetings and workshops, demonstrating its ease of use. Fiona also developed a comprehensive learning tool kit for designing effective learning experiences. Her toolkit, which included Easygenerator, won her an organization-wide award. This created an even bigger interest in the tool from WSP’s global offices. Today, WSP uses Easygenerator at a company-wide level in over ten regions. In 2024, the number of global users increased from 150 to 345, and continues to grow almost every day.
